Taking a break from online activities given how nuts everything currently is. Imagine me hanging up one of those "Out to Lunch, Back Soon!" signs on this blog.

Hope you all find the good in each day and have ample opportunities to find rest!

Fixation of the Week
  • I got my Jeltsje/Rodney bracelets, and the artist was so sweet and made buttons of them too!! I've been so happy about them all week, and I think when I get paid I'll ask them to make a Takumi/Francis themed pair.

Media Stuff
  • Dr Who S05E06-10 - Oh man, I love this silly British twink and his adventures through space and time! They're so hopeful and lovely, and even silly and bad episodes have this sense of delight, and childlike wonder and fun. I feel like I'm watching a comforting fairy tale each time. The show sometimes puts me to sleep, but in a nice way; the chamomile tea of sci-fi. Excited for the next season of Eleven!
  • DNDads S3E01-04 - Relistening to refresh my memory on the plot, and also to get little characterization snippets of Francis. I love his development so much - he's very clearly a coward but has dedicated goals and works hard toward them, alongside being... well. Francis. A bullied pervert with impossible parental expectations thrust upon him.
  • Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping - a very cute, short little visual novel. Played it all in 1 sitting! Highly recommend because the lead duo of Sean Chiplock and Brain David Gilbert as a drunk noir duck detective and an overly enthusiastic sidekick is hilarious.
  • Deltarune (sensing a theme here) - Beat Chapter 3 this weekend, and moving on to Chapter 4 right now. Was not expecting that twist at the beginning, or at the end. It has reawakened my latent crush/"oh my gosh they're so cool I love them so much" feelings re: Susie, and I ain't complaining. I was not expecting the symbolism and throughline of media consumption in Chapter 3, and it honestly gave me a lot to think about, alongside...
  • How the Bible Actually Works: In Which I Explain How An Ancient, Ambiguous, and Diverse Book Leads Us to Wisdom Rather Than Answers―and Why That's Great News (holy title, Batman) - almost done with this book, and I think the author has taught me a lot! I think his emphasis on the Bible being a tool to draw us toward the pursuit of wisdom and adapting to new information, and not a literal be-all end-all truth, has been a wonderful way of showing the development of the Christian religion while not forcing yourself to be married to a particular translation, or collection of books. I'd been worried about the Apocrypha and my lack of knowledge on this subject, but the book was a great way to show that there's a lot of contradictions that arise from simply viewing the Bible as this monolith rather than a divinely inspired book put together by fallible humans trying to make sense of the world around them through the lens of their own culture and that divine inspiration.
  • The Children's Blizzard - a nonfiction book about the blizzard across the Dakotas in the late 1800s that caused hundreds of people to die due to its severity, and the lack of proper weather forecasting seriousness in the US Army at the time. Utterly fascinating, and so well written. There are quite a few quotes from this I've saved simply because the author does a lovely job describing storms and their destructive power in such poetic language.
  • Looking at signing up for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang this summer to get some of my Takumi/Francis brainworms out of my head. Am I going to put these funky guys in Situations? Yes I am. Am I going to go into gratuitous detail? Yes I am. Still thinking through the scenario, but I think once I get it written down I'll officially put myself down for a 5k+ fic of whump! And thankfully, signups aren't until July 10, so I have plenty of time.
